Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My small school is a Title I middle school that is located in the suburbs of Phoenix. It has 750 sixth and seventh grade students from lower to lower-middle class families. The school is located in the middle of the neighborhood school. It is the community hub and gathering spot for the individuals who live in this area.
Our students are eager to learn about all things.
They want to learn about things that happened in the past, things that are happening in the present, and what is going to happen in the future.
My Project
My hobby is researching my ancestry. I first started this hobby when it was assigned as a project by my sixth grade teacher. i still have my family tree notebook. This led to me deciding to share my expertise in an enrichment class that I will run after school.
Students will learn how to research and record their family tree.
They will research their family on a free site, that I personally use. They will upload pictures to the site using a wand scanner. Next, they will print their family tree, complete with the uploaded pictures, onto parchment paper. They will hole punch the pages for a three ring binder that i will provide for them. This will become a family keepsake.
This class will last for at least a quarter. We need the storage unit to keep our supplies and binders organized and separate from the rest of the room. I hope the students enjoy it so much that the class continues past the designated time. I also hope that the parents will become involved with their child in researching and attend the class with them. I would love for it to become a family activity.
We will end the unit by watching the movie Coco and making keepsake ornaments. They will decoupage copied pictures of one of their ancestors onto chandelier crystals, paint the back with silver paint, add wire and beads to make an original keepsake ornament.
