My students need books that teach Growth Mindset. These books will help students understand that mistakes aren't bad; they help you learn and that you just can't do something YET!
Our school is in a low income area with a transient population. For many of the students, school is their only place of safety and stability. They come to school each day with a lot of baggage, and they do their best to learn.
As a teacher, I try hard to create a safe and inviting space for my students so that they feel comfortable and ready to learn.
Many of my students do not have exposure to everyday experiences that children in a higher income bracket might have. I strive to provide them with experiences that will help them build background knowledge.
My Project
Each year I teach my students about growth mindset. Students really enjoy hearing stories about kids who learn from their mistakes. These stories will teach them about the importance of trying your best even when it's hard.
Trying hard things helps our brains grow!
This concept can be hard for students to understand because hard things are hard to do! Using these books as read-aloud will help students gain a better understanding of why doing hard things will help them learn.
It is helpful to have these read-aloud books available for teachable moments when kids are struggling with feeling frustrated. It is great to be able to pull out one of these books and help the students learn a valuable lesson.
