My Students

My 7th graders are amazing and deserve getting funding for a project that will be memorable for them! Many of them face personal struggles, yet come to school continuing to try their hardest. These kids come from families of all walks of life, varying socioeconomic backgrounds, and have varying science backgrounds.

One characteristic this group of kids have in common is their tenacity when faced with challenges.

They have impressed me greatly with their ability to persevere and cooperatively work together while facing these challenges. One student of mine described science and engineering, when asked why they enjoyed science so much, as “It’s sort of like finding the answer to the problem that really hasn’t been thought of before. Like you need to fly a plane, but something is causing an issue. You have to look in every nook and cranny to find out what is wrong. Despite the tediousness of it, I kind of like it all….When you have to visualize math in the real world, it’s kind of hard, but in science you see how it works in the real world. You see that connection. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle in a sense."

My Project

Students work their way through our "Mimicking Nature's Design" unit where they investigate several concepts that build upon one another in order to answer the guiding question of "How does energy and matter flow within living and non-living things?" As students progress through the unit, one concept we'll be exploring is the chemical reactions happening during cellular respiration and photosynthesis, making observations and using the results of investigations in their final project. The plant growth cart will allow for a place for students' test samples to go.

The last thing to highlight is the final project, which is to design and build an aquaponics system that mimics a natural ecosystem.

Student projects will be housed in the plant growth cart.
