This project is student created and learning is student driven. The design of this project was fully developed by the students. Students are in the process of researching in order to learn how to develop a self-sustaining pond-like ecosystem for the classroom as the conclusion of our ecology unit. In groups, students will then take the scientific knowledge obtained to create a written proposal with diagrams. Proposal requirements will also be determined by the students. Groups will present their proposals to the class. The class will then vote on the winning design proposal, which the class will then build using the materials funded by your donation. Activities that incorporate science (learning the content) and engineering (applying what they learn) are way more meaningful and increase 21st-Century skills, such as problem-solving and communication. Additionally, students’ attitudes in science decline in the middle school years. STEM integration is a way introduce students to project-based learning (PBL). PBL is at core of science and engineering instruction. This project is just one way to increase students’ solving problem skills while fostering a deeper level of inquiry, and creating or maintaining positive science attitudes. If students can also see the importance science has in their lives, then our country can maintain its edge in competitive STEM fields and develop educated citizens.
