Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm fortunate enough to work with very amazing, yet underprivileged students! These students work hard to accomplish their goals, but need a lot of support in order to do so. I am willing to do what I need to do for my students, but there is only so much one person can do.
I am a Special Education teacher in an Integrated Co-Teach class, in a diverse school, my class has 12 students with all kinds of disabilities blended into a general education class; totaling 32 students!
As you can imagine, it is difficult enough to help one student who needs extra assistance now try to take into account other factors (small space, many students, multiple distractions, not enough resources...) Not only do my students have to overcome their own personal challenges that they face with their learning, but they also have their environmental factors that affect them on a daily basis. They are great kids, who need a lot of guidance and support to work to the best of their abilities!
My Project
A few years ago, our school was under construction to have an addition put on to our very old original building. The addition to our school is wonderful and has given us the extra classroom space that we need, however, we completely lost the great outdoor space we had.
We would like to start making the blacktop more kid friendly while teaching the students about responsibility.
We are very excited to create a garden area where we can grow herbs, spices and flowers that the children will then be able to take home and use in their own homes. We are asking for knee pads to have a place to sit and observe the plants growing, and watch the bees, butterflies and other bugs that the plants will attract. We need garden beds, soil, shovels, bins and gloves to start planting so that we can observe nature at its best!
