My Students

Our students are amazing. They come from diverse backgrounds and ethnic groups. Ten years ago 28% of our school population qualified for free or reduced-priced lunches. This year all students at our school will receive free or reduced-priced lunches. More than half of our students are raised by single parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, or in residential homes. Yet they come to school with a love of learning and sense of adventure.

My goal is to demonstrate to students the need for a greenhouse to reduce carbon emissions and provide healthy food for our school.

This grant is vital to help educate and motivate students to make healthy lifestyle choices.

My Project

My students are currently studying greenhouses and various growing methods. Our goal is to build a greenhouse to provide lunch for every person in our school with the food that students grow. In addition, students are researching their carbon footprint and how a greenhouse can have an impact on reducing their footprint. The hydroponic systems kits will allow students to complete a test run of how hydroponic systems actually work. They will then calculate the size of a greenhouse needed, materials to grow the plants, and the means necessary to operate it. Students will be expected to create healthy meal plans and propose them to food service personal.

Students are super excited to get their seeds/plants growing - strawberries seem to top the list.

As part of our curriculum, seventh graders study plants and plant processes. We would use the plants they grow for eating and scientific research. Students will see first hand what it takes to grow the food they eat and how that happens. In this day and age of the growing use of technology and increasing rate of obesity, this kind of project will get students out of their seats and allow some great hands on learning.
