They were so excited when the cast iron pans arrived. Students learned how to properly season and clean cast iron cookware. We followed the recommended Lodge Cast Iron protocol for seasoning and cleaning. They put that knowledge into practice by cleaning and seasoning the skillets that arrived from DonorsChoose prior to their first use in our family and consumer science middle school classroom. \r\n\r\nThis semester our eighth grade students learned how to use cast iron to broil steaks and roast vegetables. We covered additional food safety topics such as handling raw beef and the doneness levels of steaks. Students put this into practice by using the broil setting in our ovens to sear their steaks, then finish them using the bake setting. We tried a salsa recipe that called for roasted peppers, onions and tomatoes. Students used the cast iron pans to roast the vegetables prior to incorporating them into their salsa. This was an amazing hands-on experience for students to learn and practice practical life skills with a cookware material that can last a lifetime. These cast iron skillets will be utilized multiple times in the coming years to teach students through hands-on activities the value of cooking with cast iron.
