My students need a bunch of weed mat and seed starter trays. We're transforming a large open grassy area of our school campus to a beautiful, clean garden using grow beds.
We are a Title I school, meaning a majority of our student population gets federal assistance for meals (free or reduced-price meals).
My students are a part of my agriculture class during school and my after-school community service-based class that focuses on life skills, such as problem solving, communication, and collaboration at the same time, learning empathy, and compassion through hands-on community service projects.
We mostly work on natural resources activities such as farming lettuce using aquaponics and donating the lettuce to community members.
My Project
These materials will be the foundation to transform a large area into a beautiful grow bed garden. I currently have one agriculture class, and one after school agriculture class, but next school year we'll expand to five classes and one after school class, and I'll be teaching a summer enrichment agriculture class as well. The seed flats will help us to make starter plants. We were using rockwool, but it's really expensive, so this will be a one-time expense, which will last a long time.
Our agriculture program just got off the ground this year, and we're ramping things up this summer and next school year by converting a large grassy area to a grow bed garden.
Our students will learn how to start their own plants from seeds, maintain their plants through watering, fertilizing, and harvesting. They will also donate a lot of their crops to local families in our area.
Our students will not only learn how to grow their own food, but they will learn empathy, compassion, and selflessness by working hard for others to benefit. We will also consume some of what we grow as well, so they can learn about eating healthy.
