This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Come to the rug" my students hear many times throughout the day as I call them to gather around me to learn the new skills I am teaching. Having a new, soft, purple rug will make this a much more meaningful request. As it is, they come and sit on the generic classroom floor; hard and utilitarian.

This group of bi-literate 5th graders are eager to learn and participate enthusiastically in all the activities I prepare for them.

Most of my students live in poverty and do without extras. In our classroom I strive to enrich the environment making it visually pleasing and comfortable.

My Project

Imagine as I call my students to read aloud and they know they have a comfortable place to sit while they focus on the story. Having a defined rectangle to gather on will help develop the sense of community which is so important for student success. The rug will be used daily for whole group lessons, small group lessons and individual reading and writing spots. I can picture my students sprawled out on the rug reading a favorite book.

Students in public schools often go without the common comforts of classrooms.

A rug to gather on is a simple way to help foster a sense of caring and warmth in our classroom which will help my students' achievement.
