Group Seating for Collaborative Learners

My students need ten stools to serve as seating for guided reading groups and literature circles.

My Students

I teach 25 fifth graders at a Title I school in a rural farming community. Several of my students are first generation English Language Learners. Much of our class instruction is focused on preparing students for the future by using a strong leadership-based curriculum, and practicing principles which help students set personalized goals and take responsibility for their learning.

My students are looking forward to setting goals, monitoring their understanding, and finding success as they personally engage in the learning process.

All of my students have leadership roles in our classroom, and several hold school-wide leadership roles as well. My students set Wildly Important Goals, and track their progress toward those goals. Students are actively engaged in monitoring their understanding of all class material. This self-reflection prepares my students for times in their life (such as post-secondary education) when they will be independent and rely on their own habits and skills to achieve success.

My fifth-grade students are looking forward to using the skills taught in our classroom as they achieve their goals in life. Most have strong desires to go to college, and recognize that the skills they learn now will help them fulfill their potential.

My Project

My classroom needs ten stools for guided reading groups and literature circles. These stools are the perfect size for my fifth graders, and will contribute to a positive, practical learning environment. Each day, my students meet with me in small groups for personalized guided reading lessons that develop literacy skills. This instruction is crucial for my students' growth as readers. While this instruction is taking place, other students in the class discuss their personal reading together in literature circles.

These stools will benefit my students by allowing them to sit together comfortably in a designated collaborative guided reading area, and with literature circle groups.

Students will be able to share their experiences and thoughts about literature with their peers in a collaborative learning environment.
