My Students

Through everyday life, we all have priorities and tasks to be completed...When "Mother Earth" becomes restless, most of our menial tasks are forgotten or take a backseat to the safety and concern for our hearth and home. Sinkholes, weathering and erosion of our land, salt water intrusion, etc...

My student body lives in a very dynamic area.

Florida, throughout geologic history, has been an ever changing slice of land that has been covered with water many times. The "land" itself is weathering under our feet and most do not understand why? Our future is going to involve many more sinkholes, the loss of our drinking water supply, sea level rising will cause the loss of our beaches and coastal communities. Our school is a college bound school where we are striving to just not attend a college or university but to excel in those surroundings. The better understanding and practical knowledge of our environment can only enhance each students "toolbag" with which they are going to rely on making decisions for their individual lives and the community in which they live.

My Project

One of the hardest things for students to picture is what is happening below their feet! With the requested equipment, the overall process of weathering and erosion will be broken down to each process along the way. The Erosion and Deposition lab allows students to see the big picture of the breaking down of rock to sediment and the movement of this sediment to likely areas of deposition and why. The groundwater kit will allow the students to see why certain minerals break down while others are carried away and how this impacts our society in Florida. The "How soil is formed" kit will allow the student to see the end product of weathering and erosion and the environmental impacts of soil conservation.

The wide reaching impact of this project is to allow students to better understand their local area.

How environmental decisions affect the whole community. It should show them the likely future pitfalls and concerns we will be facing as a society.
