Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning math facts is fun when we practice them to music from Kim Sutton's Creative Mathematics curriculum! Unfortunately, our CD player doesn't get the volume we need and skips. An ipod Touch and Bose speakers would provide the amplification and ease management of this daily math routine.
My class is a 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade English Language Learner classroom that come from all over the world.
My students are refugees and immigrants who are excited to be in school! During our math block, I have 11 general education 1st graders in addition to my homeroom 1st graders and teach a 1st grade math block. This project would impact 21 ELL students and 11 general education students all together.
My Project
With these resources, students will be able to clearly hear numbers, chants, and lyrics which will provide a fun and motivating way to engage with math. Music has been shown to lower anxiety and help students with memorization skills. My desire is that my students would not only understand the concepts of addition and subtraction, but be fluent with them as well. By varying their practice with music, I hope they will achieve this.
These resources will also allow me to have even more efficient classroom management. With songs on the ipod, I won't be wasting classroom time changing music discs for different activities and worrying about skips. For this math block, I have 55 minutes to transition students from recess to math and teach not only math fact strategies, practice and fluency, but the deep discourse of student math talk and critical thinking. Time and smooth transitions are essential!
When students leave the primary grades having mastered their math facts, they become more efficient at solving complex math problems in the upper grades and can engage more deeply in math discourse.
Your contribution to this project will help them become the super mathematicians of tomorrow! Thank you for considering donating to our class! Your contribution will impact tomorrow's thinkers!
