My greatest joy in life is gardening and agriculture. Since the moment I started this year, I have been working with our construction trades teacher to bring gardening and horticulture knowledge to our school. We collaborated on a project to bring hydroponic gardening to our school, and in January put a call out to students interested in being part of a gardening club.
Initially we had hoped for 5 dedicated students, but were overjoyed when 20 students showed up to the meeting and more show up each week.
We have received a number of donations from local businesses, but need your help to get the last few supplies necessary.
Our students come from all grade levels, and backgrounds, from experienced gardeners, to brand new to growing.
Our long-term goal is to create a club that will help feed some of our students in need(around 50% receive free/reduced lunches), and raise funds to get students interested in how our food gets from farm to table. Our students dream of creating a sustainable club, and more importantly a sustainable future.
My Project
From the Garden club, we hope to incorporate lessons about agricultural principles, gardening principles and how they differ. We also aim to incorporate my advanced nutrition and wellness classes into the garden to discuss the progress of growth as an introduction to farming principles. From this, we will build discussions down the path of farm to table. With the resulting produce, the advanced students will learn menu planning and creating a recipe to utilize the ingredients available to them. We will have the garden beds, and tools maintained by our construction trades classes. Our Arts department hopes to use walls of the garden beds as an ever changing mural for each year's classes.
It is our goal to make this an across the curriculum initiative that will boost the idea that gardening is for everyone.
