Through talking about portion sizes of various foods, tactile examples will help hone in the perspective of how these foods fit into our lives. By generating their own plate and accessing as a group, students will be able to understand where errors in portion size can easily occur. For instance, the typical sugary breakfast cereal serving size is 3/4ths cup, and non-sugary varieties being 1 cup. These recommended servings are often well below the amounts that the average American actually consumes. Additionally often students focus solely on the number on the scale. A representation of fat/muscle in the body will help show that weight is just a number not a demonstration of our value. Our perception can be skewed from ignoring our body composition in favor of the number on the scale.
