Green Materials are Fun Too!

Help me give my students a hands-on and engaging experience this year while still promoting Covid-19 safety protocols!

My Students

I am a third-grade teacher in a Title I school. The area where we are located is near a naval base and allows for military and non-military families to attend our school.

One hundred percent of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch.

A lot of the students at my school also receive food bags to help support their families over the weekend. Of our student population, 80% are considered to be a minority and 74% are economically disadvantaged. Since we were sent home due to Covid-19, my school continues to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students with a drive-up system. Our school district has given away 1 million meals since March 13th.

My classroom is an inclusion classroom where some of my students have an IEP for academic needs and others have an IEP for social-emotional needs. We come from different backgrounds, but in the classroom, we come together and teach one another about ourselves and our culture. We are the future and learning is the key to a bright, successful life. Happy, healthy, educated students are what we are all about!

My Project

In this project, there are a few different materials that will be used across the 3rd-grade curriculum. First, the Boogie Boards will replace the constant need for new expo markers to solve problems on their own white boards. Then the other two things are two different types of Pop-its to use in math and reading.

We will use these out-of-the-box materials to make learning engaging and exciting while reducing the amount of trash we contribute to our environment.

The Boogie Boards have a battery life span of 5-7 years, imagine HOW MANY expo markers could be saved over 5-7 years. I know as an educator HOW MANY expo markers my class goes through during the year and it is a CRAZY amount. Plus expo markers aren't cheap (well the higher quality ones that last longer than a day aren't cheap). We use whiteboards and expo markers each and every day in our 3rd-grade classroom. We use them in reading to solve ABC order or guide word questions, we use them in math to show our thinking/work since complex and multistep math shouldn't be done in our heads.

The pop will be used in reading and in math as well. In reading, we will use the smaller pop it to help push the sounds we hear in our phonics lessons. For example the word "STOP" we hear 4 sounds, "S-T-O-P" so we would push four of the bubbles down while sounding out the word. The larger pop its are going to be used in math. I am going to make them into 100's charts which are a wonderful resource that the class can use to solve many different types of math problems.

These tools will be engaging and environmentally friendly!
