My students need a new laser printer so they can print their designs and projects. The current printer was made in the last century and is on its last legs.
The 11-year-old laser printer in our Green Engineering Academy's engineering lab is on its last legs. We propose to replace it with a new laser printer, that will allow students to rapidly print their assignments and projects in a tree-saving duplex format and without constant paper jams.
The students that I teach are part of the brand new "Green Engineering Academy" at our school.
All students have applied and been admitted to this program based on their interest in engineering and their commitment to improving and maintaining their academic levels. Half of my students are considered "at risk" and through hands on "STEM" (science-technology-engineering-mathematics) teaching we hope to challenge these students, educate them with state of the art concepts and equipment and to motivate them to excel in school. It is a daunting task at times, but one we think we can accomplish with the help of the community.
My Project
The engineering lab is the hub of our academy. Students take their engineering design courses there and also use the lab's technology resources to complete assignments for other classes as well as extracurricular projects. We frequently print 500 pages per day of engineering drawings, PowerPoint slides, worksheets, essays, you name it.
Unfortunately, the existing laser printer, which was installed during the Clinton administration, is not up to the task, jamming frequently and requiring cartridges and spare parts that are almost impossible to find. My students have become experts at clearing jams, but we need a better solution. Also, the current printer can not do duplex printing. That means a 10 page document requires 10 sheets of paper.
We would like to buy a new laser printer that will run reliably, consume less energy, will have readily available supplies, and will have a duplex mode which can reduce paper use by up to 50%. Now that's Green Engineering!
Our Green Engineering Academy is a brand new program.
We propose to close the achievement gap in science, technology, and mathematics by giving these students a challenging academic curriculum as well as the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Pathway to Engineering curriculum. We think we can raise the academic level of these at-risk students and we hope you will consider helping us do that!! This project qualifies for the Chevron "Fuel Your Schools" program and the Chevron Classroom Challenge Program.
