This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My favorite unit to teach every year is Greek Mythology. Not only is learning about ancient Greece a 6th grade standard in Social Studies, we also read the novel "Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief" in Language Arts, which is a modern day myth with allusions to Greek mythology. To prepare students, we study famous Greek myths and students complete a research project and presentation on one of the 12 Olympian Greek Gods.

Students love choosing a Greek god to research and learn about to prepare for reading the novel.

Currently, students do all their research online about their chosen God, but I would like to have them read a text as well.

Another state standard asks students to compare and contrast different forms of the same text. Having a class set of the graphic novel edition of Percy Jackson will allow us to read the novel and see how that was adapted for the shorter graphic novel edition. This helps students think critically about how various authors adapt material and the choices they make.
