This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our class has worked really hard this year, and I want them to have the best. I traditionally make summer gift bags for them with little goodies, always including a book. This year, I would LOVE to upgrade their gift bags with even more fun and engaging learning extensions.

Summertime offers a wonderful (and much needed) break, but students must beware of THE SUMMER SLIDE!

Studies show this common pattern of regression in student learning while they're on longer holidays. While an amount of backsliding is normal and easily reversible, it is advisable for students to do what they can to maintain their skills independently while schools are out of session.

The big thing we at HES remind our families to do is to READ, READ, READ! This alone gives student a leg up as they enter their next grade levels. This is why I would love for each student to have their own, brand new copy of The One and Only Bob, the sequel to the book we've been reading together, The One and Only Ivan. They have expressed interest in reading the sequel, and I would love to surprise them with this parting gift. Also in their summer break gift bags, if this project is funded, would be a mini STEM project for each student to take home, and a "Summer Bridge" activity book that would help students keep on target for their upcoming grade level with a variety of learning activities to complete in just 15 minutes a day.
