My students are an eager-to-learn group of kids. Last year our school and our community were effected by Hurricane Harvey. Many students were directly impacted and many lost homes and most of their possessions. We, as a community, have been working hard to rebuild and come back stronger than ever before.
Our school is located in Southeast Texas and all of our students are on the free breakfast and lunch program.
These families are already considered to be of low socioeconomic level and now many have lost everything they own due to Hurricane Harvey and the flooding that was a direct result of the storm. We as a community are finally moving forward and healing from this disaster.
My Project
One of the challenges in our small neighborhood school is storage. It has been over a decade since new furniture has been purchased for my classroom and many pieces are antiquated and becoming more and more dilapidated as the years go on. Over the last few years the backpack storage system that we have had in our classroom has become increasingly more worn down and some parts are even broken.
I would like to provide my students with and new and much safer alternative for storing their personal materials.
It has been difficult to find storage solutions for more than 20 backpacks and coats while keeping the students from trying to use the parts of our cubbies that are broken and dangerous to use. I think my students deserve to have a nice storage system for their backpacks.
