Help me give my students mobile-friendly, multilingual home playlists, where students are put in the role of the teacher at home, leading their families through dynamic home learning activities.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Over 80% of our students are on the free and reduced lunch list and many of our students are learning English as a second language. Despite the many challenges they face, my students come to school each day ready to overcome these struggles.
My sixth grade students need their loved ones at home to become engaged in their learning at school with PowerMyLearning.
Family engagement in schools improves student achievement, reduces absenteeism, and restores parents’ confidence in their children’s education. Students with involved parents or other caregivers earn higher grades and test scores, have better social skills, and show improved behavior. Becoming active at home is an important way to increase involvement and student success. PowerMyLearning offers students a way to use family playlists to engage with loved ones at home about what they are learning at school.
My Project
Using mobile-friendly, multilingual home playlists, students are put in the role of the teacher at home, leading their families through dynamic home learning activities. These playlists use the home language of the student to create Family Exploration activities. Parents and loved ones receive a text message link when a new playlist is assigned. The student then completes a Family Exploration Activity together with those at home. Family partners then send feedback on the lesson and experience in general to the teacher. The information provided then allows the teacher to further meet the learning and social/emotional needs of the student.
The most significant type of involvement is what parents do at home.
By monitoring, supporting and advocating, parents can be engaged in ways that ensure that their children have every opportunity for success. The involvement of family partners in the learning process ensures that students set goals and foster a home learning environment supporting the achievement of these goals. Furthermore, caregivers are given a unique opportunity to develop a positive relationship with their child’s teachers, keeping in touch with them often, and using their input to frame instruction. In this way, a caregiver's voice is simultaneously validated and valued.
Building a great school is a shared responsibility. Thank you for allowing my students to experience this first hand with the use of PowerMyLearning.
