Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 25 students. They are cute, curious, silly, and excited about learning. These seven and eight-year-old students want to succeed in school. They are eager learners who want to learn! Learning to be successful is very challenging with all of the budget cuts that affect the classroom. 95% of the students are English Language Learners, and the adults in their household have a minimal English language grasp. They also come from very low-income families. Most of which are single parent-run. They all get free school-provided lunches and breakfast from a Title I school. Teaching students in the 21st century has become a challenge. 95% of them will not have a bright future growing up in the area that we are in.

Our class always says, "Do not follow your dreams, chase them and catch them!"

My students are very eager to learn and express themselves using technology and in this age of having very diverse groups of students in a classroom. Being able to hear and see them through online learning is getting tougher and tougher every day.

My Project

Many of my students come from African-American, Asian-American and Latino families and they are being taught with textbooks that are of no relevance to them. Think if you were a student that was taught with books that you could not relate to. How would you feel? My students and many students of color feel unsupported and not wanted in the schools of today. Statistics show that 80% of all of the black and brown students tend to learn more if they feel included in their education. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy-I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.

They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
