Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine reading a book and struggling through the pages because the words seem so foreign to you or not understanding what your reading. My students live this everyday in school.

My students attend a public middle school in an urban district where most come from low-income families.

They are in the 7th grade with reading levels ranging from 1st to 7th grade. Although most students struggle with reading, they try their best to get through class. They are very willing to learn. Most of my students don't have time for independent reading at home because of family responsibilities so they don't have the time to practice.

My Project

I am requesting Scholastic magazines with short stories, post-it notes, and journals. Teaching reading strategies while reading short stories will help my students improve their understanding and comprehension. They will use post-it notes while reading and create a reader's journal to record their information. We will also hang post-it notes around the room with reading strategies and use as hands-on activities during and after reading. These activities will help my students to understand what they read and become better readers.

Reading and comprehension are essential for students now and in the future. Please help my students gain the knowledge they need now and for the future, to become productive adults. By giving them the resources they need in order to be involved in meaningful activities, you will be helping them tremendously increase their reading skills.
