Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, curious, and creative. Many are language learners, and live below the poverty line. My students love funny books, art projects, and investigating the natural world. They have endless questions about space, dinosaurs, and Picasso.
Many of my students are struggling with learning and physical disabilities.
They are trying very hard to become scholars, even as their academic levels range from K to 5th grade. My students are resilient, but living in poverty presents many extra challenges.
They need and deserve the best.
My Project
We are a public school of the arts. Students learn about basic elements in art: line, texture, shape, value, form, and color. Students then apply this knowledge to every subject area. My students need books to help reinforce these concepts, while being inspired by famous artists from the past and present.
It's important for children to be represented in their literature.
Many of these books are about women artists which may help young girls see themselves as artists. I am trying to broaden the scope of artists we have represented in our library so that all students are represented, regardless of ethnic background.
