I am the school counselor at K-5 school in West Orange, NJ. My students range in age, backgrounds, and life experiences - making my job both challenging and incredibly rewarding. My students come from all walks of life - the socioeconomic and racial diversity within the school creates a rich school demographic that inspires acceptance and celebration of diversity.
I run a whole school character initiative entitled “Caught with Character”, that is very popular at my school, promoting good character, kindness, and motivates students to go above and beyond expected behavior at any given grade level.
Once “caught”, students receive tickets that are entered into a raffle with the possibility of winning a prize.
Due to the pandemic, I have to adjust my prizes to be remote-learning friendly. Instead of earning gift certificates for local eateries, I am hoping to have family friend options such as board games and activities to get my students through the impending long winter days.
My Project
These items will be used as prizes in a school-wide character program. Students will be entered in a lottery for good behavior, and prizes will be auctioned off at the end of each month of school.
These prizes will keep students engaged with their families, and off technology and video games after a long day of remote learning.
The items are high interest games and activities for elementary school aged children, ranging in ages and abilities. The prizes were chosen carefully, with a focus on promoting creativity, teamwork, and socialization.
