As a school counselor my overarching goal is to help young students develop positive character. In elementary school, students learn foundational academic skills but they also learn how to be respectful, open-minded, caring, kind, encouraging and trustworthy. I teach classroom lessons related to these traits but am only in each student’s class once a month. And while teachers integrate character education into their instruction, most of the social interactions and challenges students navigate in school occur outside of the classroom. As students encounter different social situations they need to be reminded of how to show the content of their character and develop positive relationships with their peers. With this goal in mind, I want to adorn the hallways of my school with quotes and messages promoting good character. It is my hope that these inspirational words will reinforce the lessons I teach and messages I promote.
