Great Graphic Novels

My students need to be able to read different types of books. We are trying to show them that there is much more out there than the traditional chapter book.

My Students

As a fourth grade teacher, it is amazing to see my students grow. One way to help my students grow is by offering them a choice when working in groups. Our school is pushing towards students guiding his/her learning. This is a huge school and very important! But it can also be very difficult.

With offering a variety of levels of engaging texts in our classroom, we can keep books in our students' hands and keep them interested in reading.

There are so many new books coming out that many of my students are showing interest in.

The goal is to keep a variety of levels as well as genres in our classroom to expose students to a wide range of literature. A genre in which students are continuing to show more interest in is graphic novels. They have already given me a list of books on their wish list!

My Project

Many students are reluctant to read a book when they look at the length. By 4th grade, the expectation is to read a chapter book every 1-2 weeks. I am working to show students there are more than just chapter books out there.

Thanks to series like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, we are opening up the idea of graphic novels.

My students are excited to see different types of graphic novels being written. It used to be just comic strips, but now we are seeing some informational, fantasy and even humor graphic novels. And they aren't just geared toward boys anymore, we have a variety of books for any student. The most important thing is to make reading fun!
