Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students represent a very diverse community, which is wonderful in that a wide range of socio-economic levels, ethnicities, and languages are present in our school.
Our students tend to be in the lower middle class or even below the poverty level, and therefore are quite needy when it comes to basic school supplies or personal belongings.
Teachers often mitigate this by donating clothes or food items in various drives which are intended to help the community.
I would like to help in the way of providing current library books on country studies, to enrich the social studies curriculum.
My Project
I am the library-media specialist at a high school in Connecticut, and the World Language teachers have asked me to provide books that will inspire their students and enrich their knowledge of the countries where their particular language is spoken. Our language courses are rigorous, and it seems that there is never enough time to expose students to the culture of the various countries, including history, geography, music, art, cuisine, and many other aspects. Our book list includes ancient history for our Latin students, South American travel for Spanish learners, and high cuisine studies in Italy for our Italian students!
Our school has a very limited budget for books, and this grant will provide a much-needed resource for our students, who wish to broaden their understanding of people in different parts of the world.
