My students need quality books for independent reading and book club . Students who read more perform better on standardized testing, and I would like to help ensure that my students are reading.
Our school is home to a lot of diverse students with diverse needs. Despite their various needs, however, our students at WJMS have a lot to offer. They are passionate, thoughtful, caring individuals, and sometimes their areas of interest do not always align with the traditional norms and topics addressed in the classroom.
I would like to change that in my classroom, and give students a chance to direct their own learning by exploring their areas of interest- mental health, gender roles, sports, technology, bullying, relationships, friends, etc.
through great books.
Our classroom theme is adapted from Descartes, "We think, therefore we are," and I want students to have the chance to become thinkers through exposure to diverse books.
My Project
This year I would like students to have the opportunity to do more with book groups in the classroom. Part of that is making sure they have quality books to choose from, and multiple copies of those books. Access to good books that students actually like is huge in helping disengaged or lower-level readers.
I firmly believe that all students like reading, but sometimes it comes down to helping them find the right book.
Some of the selected titles are for use with book clubs about diversity and tolerance to go along with our unit on the Holocaust and Anne Frank. Some of the titles are for students to read independently.
Your contribution to our classroom library will better enable all students to explore topics of interest, and to find books that can capture their attention.
