My Students

Living in the 21st century requires the ability to use technology to solve problems. Although I don't want to use calculators daily in class, I think it is critical that Oakland students know how they work and have access to this important math tool.

My students are brilliant and motivated to learn.

When I asked them to write about whether they think learning about technology in a math class was useful, it was staggering to find that most students had never used technology in class and they really wanted to know HOW to use technology.

My Project

Prism calculators are really great. I can take videos of my students playing basketball, for example and I can actually load the videos onto the calculators and ask them to graph the parabola that the basketball makes. They have a full color screen and make learning RELEVANT.

I teach advanced algebra and currently have only 3 graphing calculators, yet, these calculators are required on many important tests.

Students in my class will be left behind if we don't get these calculators soon. This is a high ticket item that my students can't afford to buy for themselves.
