This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Although we are a "community school", our students come from all over Rochester. Many of them come from poverty stricken neighborhoods. We also have several English language learners.
Our school serves students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade and has a focus on STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are also a school with an "extended learning day" which means our school day is an hour longer than a normal school day. The extended learning period gives restorative practices, builds relationships, and academic intervention.
We need a large magnetic x-y coordinate plane for the magnetic wall in our classroom. We also need graph paper sticky notes and stamps so we don't waste paper printing graphs. Lastly, we need a geometry book with cooperative activities.
Geometry can be extremely abstract for students, but graph paper can make it more visual and concrete.
Transformations are a large part of the geometry curriculum and many students try to memorize how coordinates change when performing transformations, especially reflections. I always tell my students that there is no need to memorize anything because you can always graph it. With the sticky notes or stamps, students can easily add a graph to their work to understand a problem.
When they take the NYS Regents Exam in June, many problems will not provide graph paper, however, the back of the test will have a full page graph that they can use to help them. I want my students to understand that just because a problem does not have graph does not mean that they can't use one to help them. Having graphs available in many forms will help my students understand that it is okay to use resources that are not obviously available.
A large dry erase graph will allow my students to try things and easily erase their mistakes. It will also help them work together. The magnetic graph will be available for students to get up and use when they need to. It also helps other students to see someone doing something on the wall because it can give them an idea of how to get started if they are stuck.
The geometry book will help me incorporate more collaborative activities in my classroom to get my students talking about their work.
