My students come from a city that a local newspaper article once reported as having "the poorest children in New York and the most intense metro segregation in the state." It also reported that our district is probably the worst school district in the state, mainly based on reported test scores. Those statements, however, are not representative of the motivation and ability that my students have. At my new school this year, the goal is that every student will leave high school with some college credits. Many students begin taking college-level courses through our local community college during their junior year. Even though my students come from a district with a reported graduation rate of around fifty percent year after year, they still strive to be the best that they can be and graduate with college credits.
