My Students

The students in my classroom learn best when they can actually manipulate math concepts. The students in my class lack the hands on experiences of sorting and graphing. Students may be able to answer questions about graphs on a worksheet, but when they can actually manipulate objects they get it!

The students in my school come from low income households.

Most receive free or reduced lunch. We have a significant population of English language learners. My students may not be wealthy, but they are excited about learning new things. My school is an International Baccalaureate School and we believe that each child has the ability to learn and they learn best when they are able to uncover the answers for themselves. Providing a climate where students can explore new things is my passion as an educator of young children.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will inspire students to think deeply and look at information in new and creative ways. I have requested graphing mats and trays for students to use in graphing data. Students will sort colorful counters by various ways. The fun part will be watching them find connections. Students will be able to sort then graph objects using a Venn diagram. This will allow them to show how things are different and find commonalities among the objects. I have also selected some graphing activities that will allow students to practice skills taught with hands on practice. Students will have opportunities to work cooperatively to solve problems.

In an ever changing society what employers want to know is if the decisions being made are data driven.

Students will have the opportunity to understand on a foundation level how to show information using graphs and then interpret the data. Students will walk away with hands on experiences that will allow them the chance to dig deeper and problem solve.
