Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th-grade cluster is made up of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. In my district, close to 75% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. This means that many do not have the basic supplies that we take for granted.
Like all 8th graders, my kids love to create and explore.
They are most invested in their own learning when they have a hand in creating the assignment. Connecting math, science, and art is so important and helps kids explore the concepts on a deeper level.
My Project
Students in my class will use the graphing calculator to analyze real-world problems. Each year, I teach my students about budgeting. They start by choosing a job and a place to live. They then make other important life choices, like do I get a cell phone, cable, buy a car, or use public transportation, all while trying to stay within the salary of their chosen career. Having a graphing calculator will be a great resource while analyzing and weighing their options.
For many of the students in my class, spending $100 on a calculator is a lot of money.
Therefore, they miss the opportunity to learn how to navigate this important tool.
Today, the SAT is an important part of the college admission process; in fact, a bad score could mean the difference between getting into college or not. Like all technology, the more you use it, the easier it is to use. Therefore, learning to use a graphing calculator in algebra can only help my students toward future success.
