Help me give my students Graphing Calculators. Many families find these a luxury they can't afford but not having access to or practice with graphing calculators gives students a disadvantage on their AP tests.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students benefiting from this project are budding mathematicians. They have chosen to take on higher level high school math courses that they may not have the opportunity to take at other schools. They flex their curiosity and come to class with a growth mindset. They are ready to grapple with new concepts and apply what they have learned in prior courses to their Trigonometry and Calculus journeys.
Some of these students never saw themselves as mathematicians but they now have learned to own that part of themselves.
They ask insightful questions, justify their reasoning mathematically and support their peers knowing that they are on a learning journey together. I am so proud of how they have grown and I want to support them in having the technological tools that peers at other schools may have access to.
My Project
My students are budding mathematicians and they are able to use technology to support mathematical discovery. However, my students are also at a disadvantage because they are, at times, unable to afford graphing calculators, a key tool in engaging with AP Calculus testing. By having a class set of graphing calculators, students will be able to become proficient in using the technology and have the resource to use on the AP test.
Graphing calculators are a valuable tool in a mathematicians toolbox but in the past only about 10% of my students have been able to acquire one on their own.
Please help me support my students by providing them this resource and the opportunity to learn the technology.
