Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my first year teaching fifth grade in my school this year. Our school has about a quarter of our students on free and reduced-price lunch. Only about 50% are meeting standards in reading and math according to greatschools.org. If we could increase the level of engagement by providing students with books that pique their interest, the scores would increase. I want my students to be excited about learning and would love to introduce more graphic novels and reading club books as a way to pique their interest in new topics and curriculum.
I am inspired by so many teachers from around the world who share amazing new books for their classroom libraries.
Most recently I have purchased a class set of Esperanza Rising and small group sets of Slacker, Louisiana's Way Home, and others. I have a lot of students who love reading graphic novels. I think they would love these!
I can't wait to see the students' smiles when they see new books for the classroom library. Your help is greatly appreciated in making this happen. Thank you for taking the time to read our project. Please consider helping us by donating and/or sharing with friends!
My Project
Graphic novels have many benefits for readers. They help readers encode information readily which helps them with reading comprehension. Students are increasing vocabulary. Students are highly engaged in reading because they feel as though their interests matter. They are a very popular learning tool that can be used to increase literacy and fluency. While reading graphic novels, students make personal connections and use schema to increase understanding, use pictures and context clues to determine word meanings, make inferences based on what they see and read, and many other reading skills imperative to young readers. Many graphic novels explore important issues, and more and more classics are being created as graphic novels to peak student interest.
