The students at our school are as diverse as New York City. We are one of the largest middle schools in the city, with over 350 students in our sixth grade this year. Our students students come from across the city, and around the world. They are eager readers, who are still finding their footing as mature readers. The quality they share most is great curiosity about each other and the world. Reading helps them discover each other, and discover themselves.
My Project
We need some graphic novels in our class room to engage all readers. Our classroom has students on a wide range of levels.
To encourage readers we need to meet them where they are.
Many of our students are reading a grade or two below grade level, and are stuck in the in-between of reading. The books they can read successfully were written for younger readers. Books written for kids their age are too challenging to read. Often students get frustrated and give up. Graphic novels can be a great help with these students. They are high interests texts that keep their attention and provide a foothold for readers who are slipping.
These books will be a much needed resource for our classroom libraries. They give our struggling readers a chance to read accessible graphic novels in groups, having literary discussions about the texts. Students in graphic novel reading groups engage with the texts in creative ways, often drawing and creating their own stories about the characters they are reading about.
