Our seventh grade students are eager readers, but many of them struggle to find books that really capture their interest. Popular fantasy series get them excited to read through compelling adventures and stories of friendship. Once our students get hooked on these books, they are hungry for more. I hate to disappoint them by making them wait to get their hands on a copy of the few copies in our library. What I love to see is when students are talking about these stories with each other. I often see students are beginning to get excited by the Percy Jackson series asking classmates about details of the book, and making connections to Greek mythology. Seeing this kind of ELA work happening organically tells me that they are developing habits as readers that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. I want to inspire more readers with these books. When series are available in abundance, students will be more likely to jump in and join the adventure.
