Graphic Novels: The Format That Draws Them Into Reading

Help me give my students more graphic novels for our growing library. By introducing more choices in graphic novel format, including fictional stories from Sports Illustrated Kids and even memoirs, our library draws even more students into reading.

My Students

My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders nestled in the oak trees and pines of the Northern California foothills. Within the last year or so, these growing minds have worked harder than any generation before them to ensure they are successful and inclusive.

My students, now back to in-person classes, are yearning to make up for the learning loss caused by the pandemic and deserve to be rejuvenated in the library as well.

By adding new formats and bringing the library more contemporary novels, we collectively rejuvenate and inspire literacy.

My Project

In the last year, our library has been growing our graphic novel section. Especially with the help of past projects, students at our school are drawn to this format of panels and dialogue that can be visually mesmerizing. There are students visiting our library that have not checked out a book for years.

In order to continue the momentum of excitement and discoveries, our library is in need of funding to ensure we have a wide variety of graphic novels.

By offering a wider range of choices, our library will be increasingly appealing to the many types of readers we have within our students, and perhaps even enticing new readers.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
