Graphic Novels Rock!

My students need 19 graphic novels, from the "Bone Series" to the graphic versions of "Nancy Drew" and "The Boxcar Children".

I am a fifth grade classroom teacher in a Title 1 school in North Carolina. The majority of our students live in single parent homes without much money for books. My students are very bright, curious, and willing to try new things.

For our district, money is a big problem. Our school's budget cuts mean less money for things like books in the classroom. Parents are having more trouble than ever buying extras at home. For some of my students not having books at home isn't anything new, unfortunately. I have several students who are reading at a very low level. Add into that several ADHD kids, and you'll start to understand why reading can be a hard thing for many kids in our school. When I ask my students to read for fun they get very intimidated by the books we have available.

Lately I've found the best solution for this problem: Graphic novels! Graphic novels are books that are written like comics. They have story lines like regular novels but they have pictures like comic books. I have a few beat up Archie comics on my shelf and they have been read over and over and over! I think that if I had graphic novels in my room I would be able to interest my reluctant readers to give more challenging books a try. Graphic novels tend to have a higher level of vocabulary but the pictures enable comprehension.

It feels so unfair that there are kids in this country who don't have books or magazines at home. It feels even more unfair that we don't have the money in our schools to meet their needs. Would you be willing to help my students get interested in books? Children who can read have all kinds of doors opened to them. By donating to this project you can help open those doors for some wonderful, challenging, needy, special kids.
