Graphic Novels: Making Students Excited to Read!

My students need graphic novels that will help develop their love of reading and make them excited to check out and read each week.

My Students

The Community School is passionate about providing students with an inviting library media center that includes current technology, high interest literature, and engaging activities. We are a Title I school from North Attleboro, Massachusetts. There are approximately 325 students in grades K-5, including substanitally separate/inclusion Kindergarten classes, integrated classrooms, an ELL program, two substantially separate programs for students with emotional needs, and two substantially separate classes for academic needs.

My students are an amazing group of kids whom I look forward to teaching every day that I enter the building.

They motivate me everyday to give them everything I have. I teach library skills to grades two through five. We have a good time when in the library. We have completed projects such as building parachutes for Jack from Jack in the Beanstalk, making elephant trunks to go with our read aloud The One and Only Ivan, and Skype-ing with several authors from around the United States. We continue to push the limits of what we can accomplish in the library and I look forward to seeing what my students bring to our lessons in the future.

My Project

Graphic novels are very popular with kids right now. A week does not go by where a student is not asking if a particular graphic novel is in. By the end of circulation each week, the shelf is practically empty.

Graphic novels have turned many of my reluctant readers into avid readers.

The combination of the text with the engaging illustrations allows kids to become more successful at reading. As their confidence with these books grows, they are branching out and trying different kinds of books found in the library. I want my students to be excited about reading and want to provide the literature that will get them there.

Expanding the graphic novel collection will help aide me in this process. I currently can only allow students to take one graphic novel at a time in order to make it as fair as possible for everybody. Imagine trying to encourage students to read but only allowing them to take out one book that they really want. With the addition of the graphic novels I have requested, I can allow students to check out more than graphic novel at a time. By doing this, I am sure my students will be excited for library check out each week!
