Even though I am still in the process of completing the 15-week program, I have already deepened my understanding of how mindfulness, social-emotional learning (SEL), and trauma-informed practices can be intentionally woven into the school day. I've been learning practical, research-based strategies to support students in building self-awareness, emotional regulation, and positive relationships—skills that are essential for both academic success and overall well-being. The training has also emphasized the importance of educator wellness, reminding me that supporting students starts with taking care of ourselves.\r\n\r\nOne of the highlights so far has been the opportunity to actively engage in mindfulness practices and reflect on how they can be adapted for students. Practices like guided breathing, grounding exercises, and mindful movement have helped me see how simple yet powerful these strategies can be in helping students feel calm, focused, and ready to learn. I've also really valued connecting with other educators who are passionate about supporting the whole child and creating more inclusive, supportive learning environments.\r\n\r\nOne specific strategy I have already begun incorporating into my work is starting sessions with brief breathing or grounding exercises to support student regulation and transitions. For example, I've introduced a \"five-finger breathing\" activity, where students trace their fingers while breathing in and out slowly. This has been especially helpful for students who struggle with anxiety or attention, as it provides them with a concrete, calming tool they can use independently. I am so grateful for the opportunity to participate in this training, and I look forward to continuing to bring these practices into my work as I progress through the program.","fullyFundedDate":1768409474567,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-mindfulness-sel-to-school-wit/9922788/","projectTitle":"Bringing Mindfulness & SEL to School with Breathe for Change","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Greene","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10361047"},{"teacherId":10399992,"projectId":9998796,"letterContent":"As a first year teacher starting in a Title 1 school mid-year, I was faced with a few challenges. Another was what kind of a learning environment works for all of them. I am with two grade levels, first and third. They are very different, but yet the similarities of just wanting to be accepted and understood are always present. \r\nWith your help, I have created a space that they want to enter. The star rug is colorful, but not distracting. The multi-colored cushions have become a routine...\"don't forget to pick your color before we get to work!\" Some have even chosen favorite games that you so kindly helped me purchase. \r\nThe students look forward to being in small groups in the room. Already, this is such a powerful sign of growth.\r\n\r\nWith our new classroom and materials, we will continue to provide students here at our school with a place to go when big feelings arise. It was such a great experience for my students and myself. The biggest impact I think this project had on my students and myself was to see the generosity in people that we didn't even know. My students were so excited when a box would be delivered to our room and it was from The Donors Program. I would always save and do an unboxing for them and there would be gasps of excitement. Their first question was always \"When can we use them?\" They were more excited to go to reading and math centers and was actively enjoying the space that they now had to learn and grow. I was so grateful that they didn't have to stay at their desks or drag their chairs all over the room. There are now spaces to go where they could learn and explore with their peers comfortably. \r\n\r\nThe new resources are used daily in my classroom. The stackable stools are used for the small group instruction table, which I can now fit more students at the table then with their desk chairs. I also have some extra stacked in the back along with the flower pillows and my students will grab them easily for group projects, partner work, inside recess and even independent reading. I find my students grabbing them to use if they are doing partner work or even during inside recess. We use the beanbags and cushions when we are reading independently or during rug time. I have started a reading circle and we start so much quicker with the stools or pillows in a circle. The rolling cart and wire baskets is essential to help organize their group work materials. It saves time so I do not have to waste time passing out materials to each group. the students know where to go and can get what they need. I have their write boards, markers, highlighters, dice, rulers, extra crayons and pencils in the rolling cart. I also have them leave their group work in the wire baskets if they are not finished and have to work on it the next day. It keeps it safe and if there are pieces nothing gets lost. I also wanted an organizer to keep folders for each child but I ended up making it my kid station and they love it. I have extra pencils there and cap erasers. There are fidgets they can use and special pens and pencils they can earn as a reward. This is where our golden ducks and Flo the Flamingo have their home. Flo watches for above and beyond 3rd grade behavior and will fly over to visit while the ducks will visit well organized desks. Our golden stars and pompoms are also kept here so this is definitely their reward center. It has made for a happy classroom. \r\n This project was more than I had hoped for. It has made me more organized and helped my students get organized too. I am happy they have ways to use the classroom to learn or even to relax in an easier and efficient way. The next steps I would like to do is to get a bigger and more colorful rug in the classroom. The one we have now is pretty small. I also would like to get better dry erase boards and number grids since we use them a lot during the week and the ones I currently have are old and worn. I am hoping to get some more manipulatives to add to my math center to be able to use during math centers. Thank you again for your generosity and kindness you have shown to my classroom. My students are using the items purchased on a daily basis and it has made for a happy and more organized classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1742948635877,"projectUrl":"project/help-my-students-need-their-own-space-t/9087230/","projectTitle":"Help!
