The students at this school, a Title I school in an urban area, come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a magnet elementary school with a new theme of play and ingenuity, and with that comes an increase in the number of ways in which students are able to explore, create and take risks in their learning.
The mission of the library is to support the academic growth of all students, develop & nurture an interest in books, and foster a life-long love of reading for enjoyment; and the vision is to create an environment where academics, play, creativity & ingenuity merge.
The collection is in need of titles which support the mission and vision of the library.
My Project
The graphic novel section of the library is one of the most frequently circulated areas. Students are always looking for new titles, as well as rereading favorites. The graphic novel section has been weeded recently to remove outdated titles, and to provide more organization, including non-fiction and graphic adaptations of fiction titles. Award winners, such as El Deafo, are popular because of the quality of the writing, as well as the graphic format.
In an effort to add additional high-quality titles, graphic adaptations of well-reviewed classics, such as "A Wrinkle In Time" and "The City of Ember" are needed.
Other titles, such as the first three books based upon the Percy Jackson series are included in this project. These titles are a wonderful way to introduce reluctant readers to more lengthy versions of the story.
