This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

By the time they reach high school many struggling readers have decided they hate books and that books hate them. This creates so many barriers for their education. Graphic novels can be key in turning this around. They help kids find the fun in reading and this opens their minds about other texts.

My 1,300+ 9th-12th graders come from very diverse backgrounds.

Our minority and immigrant populations increase every year and we now have over 29 first languages spoken. Over 50% of our students also qualify for free and reduced lunch. We are located just south of a major city near the airport. My students' interest in reading varies greatly. Some are voracious readers, and others don't want to even look at a book. For this reason it is essential that we have a huge variety of materials so that I can find the perfect fit for each individual.

My Project

Graphic novels by definition are extremely visual. This format connects strongly with readers who are turned off by traditional chapter books. Helping students have positive experiences with reading is huge for their further development. They are more willing to try different types of materials once they've experienced success and enjoyment a few times. The more students read (regardless of text type) the better they get at reading. The specific titles I've selected are additional volumes of series that I already have. These series have been very popular and are constantly circulating. Students are rereading the titles I have so I know they will be thrilled to see new ones on the shelf.

This project is extremely important because we no longer have district funding for library materials.

Donations will make it possible to have new books for students who wouldn't otherwise get them. Plus, I think the students will be amazed that people thought enough of them to buy books that they think are great.
