Help me give my students high-interest books! These books are always checked out and rarely get returned. They are the ones that students ask for by name and then find another book to read in the meantime.
Our public school opened four years ago. While we have a new building, we are missing many of the things a school that has been open for a long time has. We are also working to build community with our families who are often untrusting of the public school system.
Our students come from all over San Francisco and are a very diverse group of kids.
The majority of our students get free or reduced lunch, and many live in public housing. Many of our students struggle with reading, and this impacts them in all of their classes.
My Project
Almost all of my students struggle with reading. Graphic novels are a great start to get students reading full-length novels. Studies show that students who read independent books will increase their reading level and be more successful throughout their schooling.
The books I have selected are always checked out and I have to turn students to other books they are less interested in while they wait for these books to be returned.
I need multiple copies so students can read a book they are interested in when they request it. It helps me build trust with the students and the ability to help them pick more challenging books later on.
