My students are the kindest and most caring, empathetic 9, 10, and 11 year-olds that I have ever met. They have managed to maintain these amazing characteristics even throughout large changes. Our school has been undergoing construction for the past few years due to the discovery of black mold in our wings. Our students have had to adapt to many new changes in their classrooms and school routines, but that has not held them back. They have had wing closures, classroom changes, and weeks worth of canceled school days and they still show up every day excited to learn.
We are located on an Indian Reservation that has high levels of poverty and we fight to provide our students with every opportunity that is available at other schools.
Graphic novels would help my students develop their interest in reading and provide my classroom with high interest reading material. Our classroom reading corner needs an update of refreshing, new materials that will garner excitement.
The graphic novels would also help the large portion of my class that struggles with reading comprehension by providing visual clues to aid in their decoding.
We are working to build a selection of high complexity, lower difficulty books that are accessible to the students for independent reading. These books would help them build their confidence as readers and allow them to enjoy stories that they can comprehend and track without adult assistance.
