Our elementary school is in an exceptionally rural part of southeastern Oregon. The nearest small town is over a hundred miles away. The school is a two-room school house serving grades K-8. The people in this area have a strong sense of community and family. Many of students have parents and grandparents that attended Fields Elementary. This is my 9th year teaching in a two-room school house setting; I absolutely love it!
The learning environment is rich and affords a unique opportunity to know "your" students.
The cooperative culture that exists between home and school is truly unique.
Students in this community are grateful for opportunities and resources not easily obtainable in such rural setting. Currently, I teach grades 4-8. There is one other teacher and an instructional aid. The other teacher teaches K-3 and is a childhood friend.
My Project
It's been a challenge finding reading materials for my students who are reluctant to read. Recently, I stumbled upon several of the "Adventures of TinTin" by Herge graphic novels. Now my students cannot get their noses out of a book!
These books turned my reluctant readers into varocious readers!
Now when given an opportunity to choose an activity, I am finding that my students who could never commit to a book for more than a few pages are now absorbed in a book.
Having these books as a resource for these students will help support their new found interest in reading. Hopefully, this is just the tip of the reading iceberg for these students!
