My students need more graphic novels for reluctant readers to encourage a love of reading. WE need books such as Star Wars, Lunch Lady and the Bake Sale Bandit and more.
We serve about 230 students that span a wide range of socio-economic and ethnic cultures. Our school began as a pilot school and was kept due to its success. We continue to strive for improving the lives of each and every one of our students.
Our reluctant readers love graphic novels.
I want to give them access to this engaging medium. All races and economic levels enjoy reading these type of books. Students who might not find common ground in other ways find it in reading!
My Project
Many at-risk students are what we call reluctant readers: they do not enjoy reading. Graphic novels is a way to appeal to reluctant readers and is a very effective means of boosting interest in reading according to research and my own experience.
I would like to double my collection of graphic novels and add to a few series I already own.
This project will also allow me to introduce a few new series to my students. Graphic novels are the most popular books in my library. The titles I currently own are checked out so often that I have a hard time keeping them repaired!
