This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are digital age learners who are still excited by holding and reading a print book! They are curious about what they may not have already noticed on a shelf and anxious to explore every section of the library.
Many of our students are avid readers who devour books, some requesting extra opportunities to return and check out new books at any given time. They simply cannot wait a week for their classroom to return to the library.
Older students are absolutely hooked on graphic novels and certain series and always asking for more. Meanwhile our younger students are picking up on the graphic novel format in lower level books and seeking new ones.
My Project
The books I have selected are all in graphic novel format. This sub-genre really appeals to my students. I am seeing an increased interest among younger students and female students but my collection is sparse.
Girls and boys are scanning my graphic novel shelves and leaving disappointed during most library classes. They are asking for more Phoebe and Her Unicorn books since I only have one. They are also interested in the Hilo series of which I only have two. The Babysitters Club graphic novel series is one that several have asked me about. I want these students to read and must have what interests them to impact literacy.
