Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the joy of hearing about the NEW books in the classroom? When I book talk new additions to our classroom library, my students are filled with excitement and can't wait to start reading.
In sixth grade English Language Arts, my students expand their knowledge base, their sense of identity, and their interests by choosing books that are just right for each of them.
They participate in reading workshop by reading, discussing, and responding to books they love.
My students bring their love of family, heritage, and a wide variety of interests to school each day. They reflect on how some books are windows into lives very different from their own while others mirror some of their experiences.
These adolescents share their joy and pain every day. We celebrate each other's successes and support one another through adversity. As residents of Skagit Valley, my classes include English language learners, migrant students, children from low-income families, and a wide range of reading levels and interests. Every child deserves access to books that they will love. That is why I invest in my students by expanding my classroom library selection.
My Project
Graphic novels are enticing to even the most reluctant of readers. The combination of illustrations and text supports comprehension for students who are learning English and building their reading skills. In Mount Vernon, we have a wide range of reading needs.
Providing a vast array of diverse independent reading books in our classroom libraries allows every student to choose books that match their reading needs and interests.
The opportunity to purchase new titles that directly reflect students' experiences and backgrounds helps me match kids to appropriate books. As students continue to devour my classroom library, I need to regularly expand the selection so they can continue to grow as life long readers.
