This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with students who come from various backgrounds, many of whom are English Language Learners from low-income families who have the drive to learn. These students are highly engaged and immersed in the English language and our school culture. However, this pandemic had the worst toll on my language learners and students with special needs. Even though they take part on remote learning projects and assignments, it is not like our school where they could hold an actual book and interact with friends and teacher.
Many of my students have limited access to learning resources right now due to due to COVID-19 and job loss of their parents.
My school district distributed Chromebooks to many of them. However, this is not enough. They are in need of books, learning materials and hope during these isolating times.
My Project
This pandemic caused us all to pause and reflect on many parts of our lives. One of the reflection I have about my teaching is "I want to integrate graphic novels to the reading repertoire of my studnets!" Currently I am taking a class how to teach graphic novels to support literacy and reading skills.
I selected a good collection of graphic novels to study over the summer and plan a comprehensive unit on graphic novels.
When schools are back in session I would love to provide a wide variety of graphic novels to my students to re for their independent reading. I am also planning to distribute some of these books to my students during summer.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
